Sanford (Sandy) Hodes is Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Ryder System, Inc., a FORTUNE 500® commercial fleet management, dedicated transportation, and supply chain solutions company. In this role, he oversees all day-to-day legal matters for Ryder’s operating companies. The general counsels for all three divisions report to him.
Mr. Hodes’ legal responsibilities include handling all of the day-to-day legal issues each division of the company, including commercial litigation, corporate transactions, customer and vendor agreements, and real estate transactions. Mr. Hodes and his teams also are responsible for supporting all corporate functions associated with environmental services; safety, health and security; corporate taxes; information technology and risk management. He works closely with all operating units and manages the administrative staff and legal departments’ internal and external budgets.
In addition, Mr. Hodes leads Ryder’s Safety, Health and Security organization. He has served in an active role with this organization for several years, providing leadership to prevent and manage risk through the company’s operations and safety liabilities, while ensuring comprehensive, consistent and effective policies and procedures. In 2017, Mr. Hodes was asked additionally to lead the Company’s Zero-Based Budgeting project and continues to oversee that aspect of the financial planning and budget performance as this project continues.
Prior to joining Ryder, Mr. Hodes practiced law for several large law firms in New York City and northern New Jersey as a trial lawyer handling complex commercial litigation. While in private practice, he counseled national and international clients in diverse and complex commercial matters, representing them in litigation before state and federal courts and administrative agencies. He also served as the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for a technology company involved in spatial data management.
Mr. Hodes earned his Juris Doctorate from George Washington University Law School and graduated from Lehigh University with an undergraduate degree in Economics.
